While the Skills Registry offers many pre-built skills, sometimes you need something custom for your specific workflow. Creating your own skill is straightforward.
Every Agent Skill starts with a SKILL.md file. This markdown file contains YAML frontmatter for metadata and detailed instructions for Claude.
The frontmatter includes the skill name and description. These help Claude understand when to activate the skill.
Good skill instructions are clear, specific, and include examples. Tell Claude exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to handle edge cases.
Skills can include additional files like scripts, templates, or reference documentation. Organize these in subdirectories within your skill folder.
After creating your skill, test it thoroughly. Try various scenarios and refine the instructions based on the results.
Once your skill is working well, consider contributing it to the community. Open source skills help everyone work more efficiently.
Keep instructions focused on one task. Include examples in your documentation. Test with real-world scenarios. Update skills based on feedback.
